HAVA R09 dishwasher salt: use the dedicated chamber
HAVA R09 has a dedicated softener chamber for dishwasher salt. Its manual gives a 250–500 g fill range, specifies cold water when the chamber is dry, and calls for an empty wash afterward. The salt light can remain on while the salt dissolves.
Salt is not another form of detergent
The salt supports the R09’s water softener; detergent cleans the dishes. Put each only in its designated place. Do not use table salt or pour softener salt loose into the wash chamber. This advice applies to R09, not to every HAVA dishwasher: R01 lacks the same salt system.
Read the chamber instructions before opening the bag
- Locate the softener chamber using the R09 manual’s diagram. Check that you have dishwasher-specific salt.
- Follow the manual’s 250–500 g range without overfilling. If the inside is dry, use cold water as instructed; the manual excludes warm or hot water for this step.
- Stir gently as directed and securely close the cap. Avoid leaving spilled salt in the tub.
- Run the instructed empty wash after filling. Do not treat this as a reason to wash a load of dishes immediately with loose salt present.
Read the matching manual alongside this checklist; it is not a replacement for the illustrated filling procedure. A bag’s total weight is not an instruction to empty the entire bag into the chamber.
Choosing a hardness setting
The manual offers H1–H7 settings. Use actual information about your water supply and match its units to the table. “My area has hard water” is too vague to choose a number accurately. If a household softener already changes the water reaching the appliance, the raw municipal report may not describe that final supply.
Ask HAVA for help if your water information or manual version does not map clearly to the table. We do not assign every reader the same setting or claim that maximum softening is always best.
Why the salt light may stay on
A light immediately after filling is not proof that the fill failed. HAVA explains that the indicator may remain illuminated until salt dissolves. Do not repeatedly top up past the chamber’s allowed level in an attempt to turn it off. If it persists beyond the expected operation, record the filling steps and contact support rather than bypassing the indicator.
Is the R09 worth choosing for this feature?
The softener is a meaningful difference for someone whose water and care routine make it useful. It also adds a consumable and a setting to maintain. It does not prove the R09 cleans better in our testing—we have not tested it—or guarantee that every cloudy mark on glass will disappear.
Questions that come up next
Can I use ordinary cooking salt?
Use the dishwasher-specific salt required by the R09 manual, not a kitchen salt substitute.
Should I buy R09 just to avoid all spots?
No model-specific feature guarantees spot-free results. Water, detergent, dishes and loading still matter; compare the whole installation and routine.
Your next useful step
If a built-in softener matters to your purchase, compare R09 with R01 before choosing the upgrade.
